Saskatchewan Pea Field Goose Hunt
Canada Geese really love feeding in Saskatchewan field peas after harvest. Field pea plants can tend to crumple to the ground under difficult growing and harvest conditions, the peas can begin to shell out under some conditions prior to harvest, and of course the peas are easy to fill up on and are full of energy, all things that make this crop extra attractive to Saskatchewan grown Canada Geese. For hunters targeting Saskatchewan waterfowl in harvested pea fields there isn't much cover as the remaining stubble is often less than 3 inches tall. Early morning waterfowl shoots are the best, preferably with cloud cover so the flights of Geese and ducks are unable to discern shadows. Low profile layout blinds are the best in these conditions, but we have been successful early in the season with naturally camouflaged stand up blinds. I look for natural cover close to where the geese have been feeding where we can often set up hunters to target birds as they set themselves to land into the decoy spread. Bill Koehler Sr and Jr, along with Chad Rouse and Eddie Lang from Colorado were happy with the set up on the morning of this goose hunt that included the harvest of a Canada Goose with a very distinctive White breast Bib (being held by Bill Sr). Bill had been dreaming for years of a Saskatchewan waterfowl hunt. We showed them that Saskatchewan is a great place to visit and an awesome place to hunt ducks and geese.
