CANADA GOOSE HUNTING
Some birds are quite famous for their migration behavior, and the Canada goose belongs to this family. They are one of the spectacle the world loves to behold as they move south in a perfect V formation. You can see the attention they command, as people come from all over, to see the big, garrulous birds in all their beauty. And for goose hunters, this is one time of the year they can’t be caught snoozing indoors.
In Saskatchewan, you stand an excellent chance to have a successful goose hunt, and this is because we are the first stop for these birds when they come in from the north. There is an expanse of land available, rich with agricultural produce and perfect for goose hunting. The province has been called the largest migration corridor of North America and for excellent reasons too.
With your passion for goose hunting, you don’t want to be caught a day late while others are already having a great hunting season. So you might want to sharpen your skills, polish your equipment and get over here. Here are some tips to help you be more successful hunting geese this year:
You need to have the right type of goose call to have a successful hunting season. So try to choose between the three famous ones which are flute call, short reed call, and resonant chamber. Out of the three, the short-reed call has the broadest range of sound, is more realistic and easiest for beginners. You might need to get a bit of practice to be able to use this call, but when you bag your first goose, it would be worth it.
Before you jump into the fields of Saskatchewan to hunt, you should first learn a bit about it. This would mean that you should practice your call, read a bit about the Canada goose behavior on the internet, and ask an experienced friend or colleague to give you a bit of training. You might also want to start at the basics and then work your way up.
Even after practicing the various calls and learning as much as you can from the internet, you still need to get to the field to practice. So get to the field where you would find a lot of Canada goose resting and feeding, then watch how they respond to your calls. Make sure you try the moaning, clucking, murmur or honking. All these sounds can be learned on tutorial available on YouTube or DVDs. Try to see what works in different situations.
You need to understand that concealment is quite essential when you are hunting. So make sure that you set up somewhere that has tall grasses or anything else that can hide you. Also, be careful not to hunt at the same place day after day as the goose are quite intelligent and would start evading your decoys. A perfect rule says you have better chances if you have 80% feeder and 20% sentries.
For shooters
If you prefer to try a different method of hunting geese, then you might not use decoys, rather try jump shooting or pass shooting. Both can be very useful and fun helping you bag a goose. But just like these and other methods, try to follow these tips:
